Get LinkedIn to the Right Social Networks

Become a Reporter - much the same as Facebook's 'like' button, you can 'follow' your favourite companies and receive automatic updates in your LinkedIn feed. Join and contribute to forums and discussions as these will increase your web presence

Status Updates - utilise LinkedIn's Company Status Update will enable you to engage directly with followers. Vary your status updates - in one post, you could share an article link to press coverage or industry news and in another highlight a new course or ask followers to participate in a Poll or forum discussion, for example. Follow the Updates of other businesses or individuals to build new connections and discover what people in your industry are sharing and incorporate keywords relevant to your business wherever possible

Reciprocate - congratulate contacts when they mention a new job or client, write a quick answer to a question someone in your industry has posted in the Answers section of LinkedIn or click 'like' on an article one of your connections has shared. Use LinkedIn to help others and they're likely to help you in return. Click on 'Follow Company' for each organisation you'd like more information about and you'll receive every update that company shares on LinkedIn. Follow similar companies - read their pages and the profiles of their members - what keywords do they use? What LinkedIn groups do they belong to? What connections do you have to these people?

You are your Brand - so choose a custom URL for your public profile, e.g. "http://www.linkedin.com/in/joebloggs". Google is more likely to display your name in a search and you will appear more reputable (assuming your profile is also complete of course). Now you can also control what people see when they search for your name on search engines which will then also return the most recent information about you. Put a LinkedIn share button on your website and a profile link in Newsletters and all communication

Utilise your Network - LinkedIn Advanced People Search enables you to locate uncover experts, sources and resources. Search by company name, company size, keywords, title, etc. and then click on a person's profile and you can see anybody in your network who knows them and can introduce you. A simple LinkedIn Status Update will assist you if you're looking for references, ideas, etc. - just post a question and see what comes back! If you're looking for background info or comment, LinkedIn Company Pages will show you current and former employees and how you're connected to them. LinkedIn Advanced People Search can also help. Type a name into the 'Company' field and select 'Past' on the drop down menu underneath.

Listen to your Network - soliciting feedback from your followers to find out what they are looking for from your business. Use polls and forums to ask questions then observe how they respond and interact with users who are commenting. Answer their questions, highlight comments and demonstrate you are listening to them. Use LinkedIn Groups to promote and track your industry and competitor activity
